In the forests of Tasmania lives the swift parrot (Lathamus discolour), a highly threatened bird that breeds nowhere else in the world. New research published recently in Biological Conservation finds they are more at risk of extinction than previously thought, with introduced sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and logging dealing two big blows to their remaining numbers.

In a paper published by Mark Urban of the University of Connecticut, more than 130 of the existing studies on extinction were included in a meta-analysis to estimate the global mean rate of extinction we can expect due to anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change.

Si chiamava Eusébio, era un leader degli indios Ka’apor dell’Alto Turiaçu che lottava contro la deforestazione dell’Amazzonia nello Stato brasiliano del Maranhão. È stato assassinato il 26 aprile con colpi sparati nella schiena da due uomini incappucciati a bordo di un moto.

Europa: 600 mila morti da smog

L’Oms ha rivisto le stime sui danni da inquinamento atmosferico in Europa. Si parla di 600 mila morti l’anno nella regione europea (53 paesi), con un danno sanitario pari a 1.600 miliardi di dollari (escluso il capitolo CO2).
